Asario, also known as lawn cress seeds (lepidium sativum), belongs to the Cruciferae family and is alternatively namedALIV or HALIM seeds in India. It's not widely utilized, thus much remains unknown about it. In India, it's grown as a culinary vegetable.
Asario seeds are small, reddish-brown seeds with a sharp, tangy, and peppery taste. They have medicinal properties, being beneficial for conditions like leprosy, skin diseases, asthma, cough, colds, and weakness. The roots are bitter and sharp. Asario is rich in iron, folic acid, calcium, vitamins C, E, and A, and contains arachidic and linoleic fatty acids. While the seeds are calorie and protein-dense, the leaves are particularly high in vitamin A.
Also known as common cress, Asario is esteemed for its medicinal properties. Its seeds contain iodine, iron, phosphates, and potash. It goes by various names such as halim, chandrashoor, and asalu. Per 100 grams, it provides 30 Kcal of energy, with 5.5 grams of carbohydrates, 1.1 grams of dietary fiber, 2.6 grams of protein, and 0.7 grams of fat. Additionally, it offers 346 mcg of vitamin A, 80 mcg of folate, 69 mg of vitamin C, 81 mg of calcium, and 1.3 mg of iron.
